There have been many a year where I've made a new years resolution to blog again. And there have been many a year where I stopped blogging by February.
This isn’t that.
2023’s resolution is to embrace play and share joy.
I was having coffee with a writer friend of mine awhile ago, and I mentioned how, as an adult with a child and a job and a house, writing time is so precious, that when I get it, I want to make sure we use it wisely. There’s a lot of pressure behind that. I limit my focus to whatever will move me closer to a goal, whether that’s getting published in a renowned magazine or catching a literary agent’s eye. The curse of the Midwestern Work Ethic.
Sometimes that takes the joy out of it.
But there’s no way to tell if a piece will go anywhere, no matter how good. The publishing world is so subjective, so limited to trends, so restricted by brands.
I don’t want to be restricted anymore. I want to play around. I want to bring the joy back.
That’s all this space is. Me just documenting the joys in my life and trying out new things. Not giving a crap if it’s building a platform or reaching lots of people or sticking to a certain brand. And hoping, at the very least, to inspire someone else to do the same.
